
Russia: Putin meets with Turkmen president to discuss economic ties
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Turkmemistan's President Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedow in Sochi, Tuesday, where he hailed the development of economic ties between the two countries.
Putin stressed that "despite the well-known difficulties in the economic sphere, our trade turnover is growing in rubles," noting that "the volume of our mutual deliveries is at the proper level" and that "imports from your country to ours have increased two-fold."
Putin also congratulated Berdimuhamedow on "the 25th anniversary of Turkmenistan's independence," adding "we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries next year."
Berdimuhamedow echoed Putin's sentiments, saying that Russia "has always been and will remain a strategic partner of Turkmenistan."
Russia holds a leading position in the foreign trade turnover with Turkmenistan. One of the main spheres of cooperation is the energy sector as Russian companies are actively involved in the modernisation of the fuel and energy industries in Turkmenistan.
