Belgium: NATO vessels in Med within 2 weeks, Aegean refugee op extended - Stoltenberg

NATO will continue its deployment in the Aegean Sea despite, despite Ankara stating that there was no need for the body to continue its mission to stem the flow of refugees into the EU beyond the end of the year, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced in Brussels, Thursday.

Speaking following a meeting between NATO defence ministers and High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, Stoltenberg stated that the officials had decided to extend the mission for reportedly operational reasons, but also because it "improved cooperation between Turkey and the European Union."

On top of the announcement, Stoltenberg said that NATO ships and planes would be in the central Mediterranean within two weeks in a bid to decrease the number of refugees from reaching European shores. "Then of course there are also other allies considering and I talked with several non-EU allies and I know that they are also considering with different kinds of assets," he added.

The news comes after Turkish Defence Minister Fikri Isik told other NATO defence ministers on Wednesday that Ankara did not see any further need for the Aegean operation past the end of 2016. Turkey might potentially attempt to block the extension of the operations as they head into 2017.
