USA: Activists detained in NY following demo against expansion of Spectra energy pipeline
Scores of protesters rallied outside the Manhattan office of the New York Senator Charles Schumer, Wednesday, demanding to put a halt to the Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) expansion of the Spectra Energy pipeline in Westchester County.
Some protesters sat outside Schumer's office building while holding banners reading "Schumer, stop the AIM Spectra" and "Our lives are on the line." The protesters denounced the expansion of the pipeline, referring to its close proximity to the Indian Point nuclear power facility in the town of Buchanan.
The protesters expressed their concern with the expansion of the pipeline as it may pose risks for the environment and weigh on those who live in the area. According to sources, more than 20 million people who reside within a 50-mile radius of the Indian Point may be affected by the expansion.
At least 15 people were reportedly detained following the demonstration.
