Russia: 60 civilians killed, 200 injured in US-led airstrikes on Mosul – Russian MoD

More than 60 civilians were killed and 200 injured in the US-led coalition airstrikes on residential areas of Mosul in the past three days, according to Russia’s Defence Ministry briefing given on Tuesday.

Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi said “we are closely watching the situation around Mosul. So far, we see no major success in the coalition’s operation to liberate this city from Islamic State terrorists.”

He added that “there are numerous facts of the US-led coalition’s air strikes against residential quarters, schools and other civilian infrastructure, buildings.” Rudskoi said “a United States Air Force plane delivered an airstrike on the Al-Hajj Yunus school for girls in southern Mosul on October 21.”

The general also stated that “ISIS militants continue to flee from the territory in Iraq to Syria” with “about 300 militants have already arrived in the city of Deir ez-Zor from Mosul”. Rudskoi explained that “Russian Aerospace Forces are monitoring the situation in the area of the Syrian-Iraqi border day and night with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles.”

The military operation to liberate Iraq’s second largest city, Mosul, that was captured by the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in 2014, started earlier on October 17. The offensive is now spearheaded by the Iraqi army and Kurdish militia, supported by the coalition led by the United States.
