France: Refugees can now 'live with dignity' - Calais prefect ahead of 'Jungle' dismantling

A press conference was held one day prior to the Calais 'Jungle' camp dismantlement in Calais, Sunday, where the French officials discussed the transferral process that refugees will now undergo.

The press conference was attended by Prefect of Pas-de-Calais Fabienne Buccio, spokesperson of the French Ministry of the Interior Pierre-Henry Brandet and Cabinet Director for Prefect of Pas-de-Calais Region Etienne Desplanque.

When speaking to the press, Buccio said that "October 24 will be a really important day. All migrants that you just saw in the 'Jungle' camp will have a worthy solution and can live with dignity in our country, and I think that's something very important."

The spokesperson of the French Ministry of the Interior noted that "preventive measures are taken. There is a heavy police surveillance," which according to Brandet is deployed "to secure the area." Brandet stressed that "there are no coercive measures against migrants," noting that "we are not forcing people to get on the bus to go to areas where they would not want to go."

The eviction is set to begin place early on Monday and will reportedly run for several days until the demolition of the camp is completed.

Earlier in the day, refugees and migrants residing in the Calais 'Jungle' refugee camp were seen receiving flyers, informing them about the camp's dismantlement and their eviction.

Around 10,000 refugees and migrants are currently residing in the makeshift camp. Last month French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve confirmed the French authorities' intention to dismantle the makeshift camp. On October 24, French President Francois Hollande gave a dismantling order for the refugee camp.
