Poland: Protest over planned abortion restrictions hits Warsaw

Poland, Warsaw
October 23, 2016 at 17:21 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of pro-choice demonstrators gathered in Warsaw, Sunday as part of a new wave of protests that have swept the country over the conservative government's attempts to tighten Poland's abortion laws.

Protesters took to the streets with black flags, and demanded "freedom, equality, abortion on demand." During a rally outside Polish parliament, one of the protest organizers Agata Czarnecka said, "Women live in fear and terror, everyday expecting the worst. We are afraid on the street, we are afraid at work, we are afraid at home, afraid in a school and recently we are afraid the most in the hospital and in gynecologist."

The demonstration took place on the anniversary of the 1975 Icelandic women's strike, when

90% of women refused to work, cook, or look after their children to demonstrate the work women contribute to economy and society.

Earlier in the month, hundreds of protests were held worldwide against a draft law that called for a total ban on abortion and a prison term for women terminating pregnancies. Days later, Poland's parliament voted against a total abortion ban but later Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the Law and Justice party leader has said that even badly deformed fetuses with no chance of survival should be born.

Poland’s 1993 anti-abortion law is among Europe’s most restrictive. At present time, abortion in Poland is allowed only if the pregnancy occurred as a consequence of rape, incest, or, although only in some cases, severe potential medical complications for the mother or infant.
