Switzerland: 'Unjustified blame against those who really confront terrorism' - Burodavkin

Switzerland, Geneva
October 21, 2016 at 17:18 GMT +00:00 · Published

Russia's Ambassador to the UN, Alexei Burodavkin, called demands of the Western countries to stop military operations in Syria "meaningless," speaking at the UN Human Rights Council meeting on the situation in the Syrian war-torn city of Aleppo, in Geneva, Friday.

Commenting on the UK's resolution on the situation in Syria, Burodavkin stated that "the situation in Aleppo has drastically changed. However, authors of the draft prefer not to recognise this." He continued: "thanks to daily 11-hour humanitarian pauses and despite terrorists' attempts to undermine them, passage of civilians, as well as withdrawal of militants from Aleppo, who have laid down weapons, have already started."

Russian Ambassador stressed that the humanitarian pause would continue if Jabhat al-Nusra and affiliated groups won't disrupt the silent regime. However, according to Burodavkin, "the authors have not recognised this and have put in the text unjustified blame against those who really confront terrorism."

Earlier on Friday, the UN Human Rights Council adopted the resolution on the situation in Syria proposed by the United Kingdom. As many as 24 members of the council voted in favor, seven against and 16 abstained. The Russian representatives proposed amendments to the resolution but they were voted down.
