Serbia: Belgrade celebrates Second World War liberation day with grand parade

Serbia, Belgrade
October 20, 2016 at 15:14 GMT -00:00 · Published

Thousands participated in a commemorative parade on the streets of Belgrade, Thursday, on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade in World War II.

The parade saw a number of veterans from the key Belgrade battle march along the city's boulevards, along with numerous politicians, public personalities, as well as ordinary people with the flags of former Yugoslavia, the SSSR and the communist organisations and parties.

The Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy Aleksandar Vulin hailed the battle's participants, saying "seventy two years ago, this nation enlisted itself on the side of the winners, alongside the biggest, alongside the best. The death of the heroes should not be embarrassed with the lives of their descendants. It's up to us to keep the memory of them alive. To be worthy of the memories of them and their size."

Speaking on the Red Army's role in the liberation of Belgrade, 91-year-old Belgrade battle veteran Borisav Filipovic said "if it wasn't for them, frankly, it would have been hard for us to succeed, but together we did a lot. The Russians contributed a lot to the liberation of Serbia. And not only Serbia, but also the whole of Europe."

More than 3.000 members of the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, along with 940 members of the Red Army, participated in the key Belgrade battle, ending up as winners and effectively ending a 1,287-days-long German occupation of the capital of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After the liberation, Belgrade became a military, political and administrative centre and seat of government for the new Democratic Federal Yugoslavia.
