Russia: MoD calls on US to influence militants to evacuate from Aleppo

Head of Main Operational Directorate of General Staff of Russian Armed Forces Sergei Rudskoi gave a press conference in Moscow on Monday where he called on the United States to push pressure on militants to evacuate from Aleppo.

Rudskoi stated that the planned eight-hour humanitarian pause had been extended by three hours at the request of international organisations: "Following numerous requests from representatives of international organisations, a decision was taken to extend the humanitarian pause for three more hours until 7:00 pm."

The lieutenant-general added that he hoped that the US would "influence the leaders of the armed groups and ensure the [successful] evacuation of the sick and the wounded, as well as the exit of civilians and militants from the city" as Russia had "fulfilled all conditions they vowed in the operation in western Aleppo."

Moscow announced on Tuesday that both Russian and Syrian air forces had halted airstrikes in the besieged city of Aleppo as parties plan for an eight hour ceasefire on Thursday. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that the humanitarian pause was to allow civilians to leave Aleppo and for aid to be delivered to the city. Militant fighters in eastern Aleppo will also be allowed to leave the city with their arms via two corridors in a bid to de-escalate the fighting in the city.
