Russia: Italian councillors apologise for anti-Russian sanctions

Members of an Italian delegation apologised for sanctions against Russia at a press conference in Moscow, Monday. The press conference comes after they visited the Crimea peninsula last week.

Stefano Valdegamberi, Regional Council of Veneto, said "I have to offer my apologies as a representative of Italy and a regional councilor for these sanctions that were directed against the people's will and against justice". He claimed that "until the very last moment we were receiving threatening letters where we were asked not to come and not to talk to Crimeans".

Fulvio Scandiuzzi, CEO of the Scandiuzzi Steel Constructions Spa, said "I am an entrepreneur and I know what myself and other businessmen need". He said "these sanctions block development that could be beneficial for business, and my own in particular, and they try to deny long-term historical ties between our peoples".

The majority of the delegation had already left for Italy when their representatives met with journalists in Moscow to comment on the results of their fact-finding trip in Crimea.

A large Italian delegation of deputies from regional councils and representatives of the business community in Italy paid a three-day visit to Crimea. The delegation consisted of 18 people representing five Italian regions which took part in various trips and excursions in the area.
