Russia: RT's UK bank account closing 'came absolutely unexpectedly' - Simonyan

Russian Federation, Moscow
October 17, 2016 at 16:15 GMT +00:00 · Published

The RT News Channel Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan said the move to close the TV channels UK bank accounts “came absolutely unexpectedly," in Moscow, Monday.

"We didn’t get any warrants or anything of the kind. The bank just sent us a letter saying that from - as of today they have taken a decision to stop all the work with us," stated Simonyan.

The editor continued “the bank didn’t explain anything. In the letter they stated that they are not in the position to discuss this matter any further." She said that “our lawyers are dealing with it. We are looking for some other options and other ways to continue our operations in the UK." The RT Chief remarked that “hopefully this will be the end of this extremely unexpected and unusual situation. Although to me seems like it’s only a start of it”.

NatWest sent RT a letter advising the broadcaster that its accounts would be “cancelled and closed” by December 12 having conducted a review. No specific reason was cited and that the decision was “final” and it was unwilling “to enter into any discussion” on the matter.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it would be demanding an explanation from authorities in the UK, while 10 Downing Street said that it was a matter for the bank.
