Nicaragua: Virgin Mary statue placed beneath the waves to boost tourism
A staute of the Virgin Mary was placed 50 feet (15.24 metres) deep into the waters of La Paloma, facing Playa Hermosa, in San Juan del Sur, on Saturday.
The Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Virgin Mary was placed at an angle of 30 degrees with her eyes facing upward and arms extended.
The submerging process was accompanied by eight professional divers, including Fabio Buitrago, who said “the idea is to create structures that have two main purposes, one is that the structures can serve as shelter and areas for reproduction for many fish species, […] the second objective that is very important is to have new tourist attractions that can make the seas around San Juan del Sur an interesting place to visit.” The statue has small openings that fish can swim through.
There are other submerged Virgin Mary statues in the waters of Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, but this is thought to be the first one for Nicaragua.
