Belgium: Kunduz attack no surprise, says Pres. Ghani from Brussels conference

President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani and US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke at the EU Delegation to Afghanistan conference on Wednesday, a two-day event discussing the continuation of economic assistance to the country.

Referring to the recent Taliban attacks in Kunduz on Monday, Ghani stated he "had predicted" that the organisation would design "a series of attacks" "to overshadow the Brussels conference" but was confident that Afghani security forces were "confidently facing and overcoming the forces of disorder."

Kerry stated that the "gains made in recent years are absolutely undisputable, but they are also fragile", adding that the delegation had "a responsibility to ensure that positive changes continue and that they become permanent."

The Afghanistan Conference, which will look at the continuation of the country's economic assistance, is being jointly held by the European Union and the Afghan government with the participation of a Russian delegation.
