Argentina: El Che lives on! Get lost in Buenos Aires' sprawling Che Guevara 'museum'

Leftist enthusiast and, in his own way, fellow revolutionary Eladio Gonzalez showed off the contents of his famed Che Guevara memorabilia shop, known as the "Che Museum" in Buenos Aires, Tuesday, an over-flowing monument to the Argentinian guerrilla fighter.

The 73-year old wanted to pay tribute to the Argentinian who helped to spread Marxist revolutions throughout Latin America, first setting up a museum in Buenos Aires almost three decades ago, before retreating to the nearby shop.

A plastic figurine of the iconic Argentinian revolutionary stands in the shop’s doorway, adorned with Guevara’s signature Cuban cigar, and a US flag at his feet. Among other items in Gonzalez’s shop is a replica of Alberto Granado’s motorcycle on which Guevara and Granado made their Latin American tour, later celebrated in the 1994 book and 2004 film “Motorcycle Diaries”.

A vial containing a small amount of sand from the Bay of Pigs, the site of the US’s failed invasion of Cuba, also stands in the shop, alongside a bottle filled with earth from La Higuera, the town in Bolivia where Guevara was assassinated.

Gonzalez opened his first Che Museum with his then wife in 1996. He was forced to close the site in 2002 on the backend of Argentina’s so-called Great Depression, after the country’s economy collapsed, leading to increased poverty levels, mass rioting, and job losses.

Turning his shop into a jam-packed ode to the Argentinian guerrilla fighter, Gonzalez remains proud of his fellow countryman and his instructive ‘museum’; "For me Ernesto Che Guevara is an imperative necessity and all human beings have to learn from his example."

Gonzalez’ epic collection, meticulously collected over several decades, still flourishes, despite economic hardship and a growing assault on leftism in Latin America. However, he is perhaps following in the steps of his hero. To quote Guevara himself - “At the risk of sounding ridiculous, a true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love.” In this case, Gonzalez' labour of love is nothing if not revolutionary.
