Russia: Five Chechens in Moscow court charged with murdering Boris Nemtsov

The trial of five Chechen men accused of murdering opposition activist Boris Nemtsov, opened in the Moscow District Military Court on Monday. All five men deny the charges.

The lawyer representing the Nemtsov family, Vadim Prokhorov, slammed the investigation saying it was "obviously a fiasco in determining who had organised and ordered [the murder]." According to Prokhorov, despite a string of petitions submitted by the victim's side, "no real, effective investigations of the high-ranking officials of the Chechen Republic have been conducted."

Shamsudin Tsakayev who is defending Zaur Dadayev, the alleged murderer, noted "we insisted on a trial by jury ourselves because we think this is the only chance to prove the innocence of our clients." He added "the first hearing is going well. This is just the beginning. We believe that all the issues are still moving ahead."

Dadayev, once a deputy commander of the Sever security forces battalion in Chechnya, is alleged to have been the assassin. Among the others accused of involvement in the killing are Anzor Gubashev, Shahid Gubashev, Tamerlan Eskerkhanov and Khamzat Bakhaev.

A panel of 12 main and 10 backup jurors began to consider the case of Boris Nemtsov's killing in the Moscow District Military Court. Former Russian Deputy Prime Minister and leading opposition politician Nemtsov was gunned down on the Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge in central Moscow on February 27, 2015.
