Colombia: President Santos votes in referendum on FARC peace deal

Colombians headed to the polls on Sunday to decide whether to ratify the historic peace deal between the Colombian state and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos could be seen casting his vote at a polling station in Bogota.

Following the casting of his vote Santos stated: "in this historic vote I hope to change the history of this country for good, ending a 52-year war, opening the way to peace, peace will lead us to a long future."

The referendum asked for a simple "yes" or "no" on whether Colombians back the agreement. According to the polls Colombians were likely to support a peace agreement.

Voting along with Santos was his predecessor Alvaro Uribe Velez, who is a strong opponent of the deal. If the deal is passed into law following the referendum results, FARC will disarm and get ten seats in congress for the next two election periods.

On September 27, after 52-years of bloody conflict, a 297-page agreement was signed by Santos and FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez (also known as Timochenko) following almost four years of negotiations.

The Marxist-Leninist FARC movement was officially formed in 1964 after a military attack against the farming community of Marquetalia, which drove activists and fighters into hiding in the mountains and isolated rural areas. Negotiations towards ending the armed conflict with the Colombian government have been ongoing since the mid-1980s, with official peace talks re-commencing in 2012. The conflict between the Colombian state and FARC took the lives of up to 220,000 people.
