Russia: Putin briefed by Roscosmos chief on progress in Russia's space industry
Head of Roscosmos Igor Komarov reported to Russian President Putin about the ExoMars expedition and the development of Russia’s space industry in Moscow, Friday.
Komarov informed the president about ExoMars, Russia’s Martian astrobiology life searching project with the European Space Agency, stating that “In March, for the first time in more than ten years, we successfully launched an expedition to Mars.” He added that on October 19, “if everything goes normally and all goes to plan, it will reach Mars’ orbit and begin to study the surface of Mars."
The Roscosmos director also gave further details of the company’s future plans; "The next stage is testing a landing module in 2020. It is a phase of the Mars exploration program which will include landing, the analysis of materials, the development of take-off methods, the return of payload and soil samples from Mars. These are important stages for scientific research."
On the topic of Russia’s space industry programme, he stated that Roscosmos had approved three of four projects: “the Federal Space Programme, in the summer we amended the GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) programme and in the last week we revised the state programme of space activities in Russia. The Spaceports programme is left, there is the problem of limits but in the near future we will also submit it and get it approved."
