Colombia: Thousands celebrate historic peace deal in Cartagena

Colombia, Cartagena
September 27, 2016 at 04:13 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands of people gathered in Cartagena, Monday, to celebrate the signing of the historic peace deal which ends five decades of war between Columbia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels. After watching the signing ceremony from big screens, the crowd marched along the streets with balloons and placards.

After 52 years of blood stained conflict and resistance between the Colombian government and FARC, a 297-page agreement was signed by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and rebel leader Timochenko.

Following almost four years of negotiations between FARC and the government, the parties completed talks on the final peace deal on August 24. If the deal passes the law, FARC will get at 10 seats in the congress for the next two election periods.

FARC was officially formed in 1964 after a military attack against the farming community of Marquetalia, which drove activists and fighters into hiding in the mountains and isolated rural areas. Negotiations towards ending the armed conflict with the Colombian government have been ongoing since the mid-1980s, with official peace talks re-commencing in 2012. The resistance between Colombian state and FARC took lives of 260,000 people and influenced another 6 million of people.
