USA: Police refuse to publicly release footage of police shooting in Charlotte

United States, Charlotte
September 23, 2016 at 20:24 GMT -00:00 · Published

Charlotte's City Police Chief Kerr Putney gave a press statement on the fatal police shooting of African-American Keith Scott, Friday, announcing that police bodycam footage of the death would not be released to the public.

"If I were to put it [footage of scene] out indiscriminately and it doesn't give you good context, it can inflame the situation and make it even worst. It will exacerbate the backlash. It will increase the distrust. So that is where discernment, judgement and reasonableness have to come in," stated Putney.

Charlotte's Police Chief also announced that a suspect in the Justin Carr murder which happened during Wednesday's protest had been apprehended, identifying the man as Rayquan Borum.

At the same press conference, Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts commented on the footage of Scott's scene and recognised that "the visually clarity made those videos inconclusive." Robert went on to confirm that there will be curfew in effect while some businesses have decided not to operate in their normal hours.

Anger over the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday has sparked three nights of protests in North Carolina prompting Governor Pat McCrory to declare a state of emergency and deploy the National Guard.

According to police, officers went to a Charlotte apartment complex looking for a suspect with an outstanding warrant when they saw Scott exiting his car. Police claim that Scott was carrying a gun; his family has said he was carrying a book. His death is the latest incident in a long line of police shootings, and has been met with outrage by the general public, the USA's African-American community, Black Lives Matter and other anti-racist groups.
