UK: EU's Schulz meets with Jeremy Corbyn on Brexit trip
President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz met with the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in London on Friday, as he travelled to the UK to meet with the UK’s leaders to discuss Brexit negotiations.
The trip to the UK comes as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson announced that the government intends to trigger article 50 next year and begin negotiations between the EU and the UK in 2017. Previously Schulz has made it clear that he would like for this to happen sooner rather than later, as he wants talks to be concluded before the European elections in 2019.
The EU parliament president has also reiterated that the triggering of Article 50 should not be seen as a formality, but instead as an essential mechanism that allows for negotiations to begin.
During his time in London, Schulz also held meetings with Prime Minister Theresa May and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, as well as giving a speech at the London School of Economics.
