Russia: OSCE observers praise 'transparency improvements' after State Duma elections

Election observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) stated that there were "improvements" in transparency during Sunday's parliamentary elections in Russia and expressed their willingness to work with the country's newly elected State Duma, speaking from Moscow on Monday.

"I want to thank the Central Election Commission and in particular its chairwoman for the excellent cooperation since our first meeting," Head of long-term OSCE Election Observation Mission (EOM), Ambassador Jan Petersen, said.

OSCE Special Co-coordinator, Ilkka Kanerva, continued: "Our work doesn't finish today. We have identified both positive aspects and problems and look forward to working with the new Parliament and the people of Russia to follow up on the challenges we have highlighted."

Moreover, Head of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly delegation, Marietta Tidei, noted that she was "pleased" to learn about United Russia's primary process: "This appeared to have been an attempt to engage people in the process and to bring renewal to the party itself."

Earlier on Monday, Chairperson of Russia's Central Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova, announced that the United Russia party had secured 54.28 percent of the vote in Sunday's parliamentary election, based on 93 percent of total ballots cast.

The Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) came in second place with 13.45 percent, while the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) received 13.24 percent of the vote. Both parties are running almost neck-and-neck with 35 and 34 seats, respectively. Fair Russia picked up 2,926,308 votes, or 6.17 percent.
