Slovakia: Schulz urges increased EU security independence from US
President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said that “the guarantee of European security is not always only an exclusively a United States item” during a press conference on the sidelines of the informal summit of the EU’s member states taking place at Bratislava Castle on Friday.
He went on to say: “the Europeans also should also look to their own responsibility. One may like it or not but it's the reality. And that leads logically to a debate of in-depth security cooperation in the European Union.” Schulz stressed the challenges for achieving security cooperation, explaining that “if you look to the 27, you have member states of NATO, you have members states who are not in NATO. Between the member states of NATO you have different opinions on the role of NATO.”
Discussing the refugee issue and the referendum held in Hungary on the quota of refugees and migrants received, he stated: “refugees are coming, they are fleeing and we have to tackle that challenge, and all proposals to solve it are welcome, therefore I don't believe that referendum will change the problem.”
On Brexit the president of the European Parliament commented that a British exit from the EU is a “a lose-lose situation for both sides.”
