Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs confirmed, Thursday, that one of her officers had shot dead a black 13-year-old male, identified as Tyre King, after he was seen holding a BB gun during a police search for assailants in an armed robbery.

Speaking from outside the Columbus Division of Police, Jacobs described the scenario; "We understand the need to discuss this particular case because of the fact we are talking about a 13 year old that we believe was involved in an armed robbery and we got a call on 911 saying that an armed robbery was being reported. Officers responded to the area, were dispatched. And once they arrived at the scene, they saw some people that they believed matched the description of the suspects, and tried to track down those suspects. A confrontation happened and there was a police involved shooting. One of our officers fired and as the result of that the young man succumbed to his injuries."

Jacobs also reported that the officer involved in the incident "will be off work on administrative leave for about a week and our policies require him to see a police psychologist before he returns to work."

The Columbus police chief also confirmed that it was "a replica gun" and "not a firearm, in the sense of a firearm with real bullets." However, she added "it looks like a firearm that could kill you."

The weapon recovered from the scene was identified to be a BB gun. Jacobs showed a replica image of the gun to press.
