Poland: Key Smolensk black box recordings cut from original, crash commission alleges

A new subcommittee investigating the 2010 Smolensk plane crash announced that black box recordings containing information about engine failure had been cut short during the initial inquiry, during a press conference in Warsaw on Thursday,

Waclaw Berczynski, chairman of the investigative body under the current government, said "some very strange things began to happen [during the first inquiry], that somebody tried to hide by cutting elements of the recording track from the black box."

The recordings of engine failure allegedly took place when the aircraft was at an altitude of 15 metres (49 feet). The subcommittee also found that fragments of the Tu-154M plane fell to the ground 60 metres (197 feet) in front of a birch tree which struck the aircraft.

Polish Minister of Defence Antoni Macierewicz stated that the committee had found "incontestable evidence of falsification, manipulation, and above all, circumvention, hiding the truth about the actual course of events."

Ninety-six people were killed when the Polish Air Force Tupolev Tu-154 crashed near Smolensk, Russia, on April 10, 2010. Among those killed was Polish President Lech Kaczynski.
