Ukraine: FMs Steinmeier and Ayrault arrive at OSCE base in Kramatorsk

Ukraine, Kramatorsk

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived with his French and Ukrainian counterparts, Jean-Marc Ayrault and Pavlo Klimkin, respectively, at the OSCE base in Kramatorsk, Donetsk Region, on Thursday.

The diplomats were met by a group of protesters holding banners reading "No to the special status [of Donbass]. We are Ukraine!" and "Don't repeat Munich 1938."

While speaking to the press, Steinmeier stated that the international community had observed a six-month-long stagnation in the Ukrainian reconciliation process. However, "as soon as the ceasefire is maintained, we have to continue working on other issues such as an amnesty law, the special status, as well as a law on local elections," he added.

The German minister continued, "in the upcoming days and weeks we will focus on how to overcome the controversies between Russia and Ukraine. Whether one succeeds or not, doesn't actually depend on us, but rather on the willingness of the conflicting parties to move further ahead and enforce the Minsk agreements."

On Tuesday, the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Alexander Zakharchenko, announced a unilateral ceasefire starting at midnight on September 15 and called on Ukrainian authorities to "take it seriously."
