USA: Mosque frequented by Orlando shooter set on fire during Eid

United States, Fort Pierce
September 13, 2016 at 01:06 GMT -00:00 · Published

Communications Director Council of American-Islamic Relations, Wilfredo Ruiz, spoke to press outside the Islamic Centre of Fort Pierce, Florida, Monday, following an arson attack on the mosque that was frequented by the Orlando shooter Omar Mateen. The attack on the mosque occurred during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

When speaking to the press, Ruiz said the suspect "terrorised our community. Still now he is terrorising our community because we don't know where he's at. We don't know what he's capable of doing."

Ruiz noted that the mosque "sustained a substantial damage," adding "we, the community, are committed to start working on reinstating the prayer services here."

According to the investigators, a surveillance video from the Islamic Centre of Fort Pierce showed evidence of the alleged arsonist coming "from the east side of the mosque" before setting it ablaze, using the fire accelerant.

Forty-nine people were killed and dozens injured in a shooting at the LGBT nightclub 'Pulse' in Orlando in early June. The shooting was the deadliest attack in the US since 9/11. Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent living in Port St. Lucie, was identified as the culprit. He was killed during the SWAT operation at the club. Mateen reportedly claimed links to the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) before carrying out the attack, but officials stated that the militant group's relations with the individual could be tenuous.
