USA: 'It depends on us, the people' - Anti-TPP activists rally in Washington DC

A group of activists gathered in Washington DC on Wednesday to protest against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, marching through the streets of the city to the US Senate, where they handed in a notification demanding that congress stop the agreement from moving forward.

Activists chanted and held banners that read 'Stop TPP.' One activist, Margaret Flowers, addressed the gathering, stating that their actions were crucial for stopping the agreement "because it depends on us, the people, to rise up against the corporate influence over our congress and make sure that we are protected, that this agreement does not go through."

Kevin Zeese, another activist, spoke of his frustration with the Presidential candidates on the matter: "Donald Trump says he is against, but he never explained what is he against, does he want more corporate power or less? We don't know what he is against. And then Hillary Clinton used to call this the gold standard, now she is saying she is against it. But you know she is doing nothing to stop the TPP."

The Trans-Pacific Partnership has triggered global opposition in recent months, especially due to the intellectual property chapter on topics such as drug patent security and digital data protection. Protesters say TPP is anti-democratic and favours multinational corporations at the expense of domestic interests. They also argue that it threatens healthcare by potentially increasing the prices of medical drugs, as well as threatening jobs, the environment and workers' rights.
