Germany: Protesters against Russian Paralympic ban forced out of Berlin library

Germany, Berlin
September 6, 2016 at 22:10 GMT -00:00 · Published

Demonstrators gathered in front of the Anna-Seghers library in Berlin, Tuesday, to protest German sports journalist Hajo Seppelt's attendance at an event there and the ban against Russian athletes at the Rio Paralympics as a result of doping accusations.

The protesters were forbidden from entering the building. One protester commented on the treatment of protesters by the police: "One of the policemen came to us and asked for Alexandra, the person who registered the demo. After that he started to talk to her in a very rude way."

Another protester explained why the demo had been organised: "We want to ask him [Hajo Seppelt] questions. How is it possible to put so much effort into depriving para-sportsmen the right to perform at the Olympics, these people who have experienced so much pain and difficulty? But with one strike of the pen on the TV channel, they have lost that possibility."

Hajo Seppelt is known for reporting on doping in sports and released a documentary film on sports doping in Russia in 2014.
