Germany: AfD says state election result sends 'clear signal' to Merkel

Chairperson of Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) Frauke Petry held a press conference in Berlin, Monday, following the party's second-place showing in regional elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the day earlier. The AfD pushed German Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU into third place, with the SPD taking top spot.

At the press conference, Petry said "it's astonishing that the federal state government and its leader Mr Sellering, who until very recently had an approval rating of 62 percent, now gets unprecedentedly bad results in federal elections; the approval ratings of SPD in this federal state fell by 9 percent."

Petry noted, "we believe that [SPD] getting 30 percent of the vote is not a successful result of their work," adding "they have no other choice but to create a big coalition, which is now not that big after all, because both parties have lost 9 percent in the approval rating."

AfD politician Leif-Erik Holm, who also attended the press conference, said he believes "the election results - either due to the weakness of the CDU or to the strength of AfD - are a clear signal to Berlin and Chancellor Merkel that she needs to reconsider her immigration policy." Holm stressed that "during many election meetings in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we witnessed what people think about her politics," noting "it is clear that the pressing issue was Ms Merkel's open-door [immigration] policy."

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is Merkel's constituency.
