Germany: Merkel discusses refugee crisis at CDU rally before regional election

Germany, Bad Doberan
September 3, 2016 at 15:24 GMT -00:00 · Published

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was present at the last rally of her CDU colleagues Lorenz Caffier and Stephan Krauleidis in Bad Doberan, in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, one day before the regional parliamentary election takes place, Saturday.

Around 300 people gathered to hear the chancellor’s speech. A few people booed her appearance, and whistled during the speech and two men brought protest signs. The police had the situation under control, giving a temporary location ban to one of the disruptive protesters.

Merkel spoke about the refugee situation in Germany among other topics such as economic growth, domestic security and international competition.

"Rightly, people also say that those who have no perspective of staying here have to leave our country again," she said during her speech.

After her speech, she and CDU candidate Lorenz Caffier signed autographs for the audience before Merkel headed to the airport to catch a plane for the G20 meeting in China.

According to recent polls by Tagesspiegel and ZDF for the state elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, SPD leads with 28 percent. It might be a close tie for second place, with CDU gathering 22 percent of the votes and AfD following with 21 percent, according to the polling.
