Philippines: Pres. Duterte declares 'state of lawlessness' after bomb attack

Philippines, Davao
September 3, 2016 at 11:43 GMT -00:00 · Published

Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte stated that the Philippines was in a 'state of lawless violence' to which he would respond, Saturday, after making a trip around Davao following Friday's bomb attack which took the lives of 14 people and left some 60 people wounded.

A few hours after the blast, the president visited the morgue where the victims of the explosion were being kept. Following his inspection, the president held a presser, stating that he "is inviting now the armed forces of the Philippines, the military and the police to run the country in accordance with my specifications."

Local news outlets stated that prior to the attack late on Friday night, the Philippine National Police reportedly thwarted an assassination plot against Duterte, the former mayor of the city. The militant group Abu Sayyaf have since claimed responsibility for the market bomb attack.

Shortly after assuming power, Duterte launched a full-scale war on drugs in the Philippines. As of August 2016, the war on drugs has seen around 2,000 alleged drug dealers killed, thousands arrested and more than 500,000 alleged dealers and drug users surrendering to the police.

Duterte has also come under harsh criticism by the international community for his alleged association with reported vigilante groups involved in the war on drugs.
