Italy: Amatrice firefighters recover ancient art from quake hit church
Firefighters managed to recover relics from the 13th century Basilica di San Francesco in Amatrice on Thursday, after parts of the church were destroyed in an earthquake last week.
While the church did not collapse like many of the other ancient town buildings, it still suffered severe damages. The basilica's bell crashed down from its hook in the bell tower, paintings fell to the floor, walls were cracking and a window caved in. However, while some religious artifacts were destroyed, others proved recoverable once the firefighters finally managed to enter the historic building.
A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck central Italy on August 24, killing 292 people and reducing large areas to rubble. Amatrice was hit hardest, with 231 fatalities and countless buildings reduced to rubble.
