Brazil: 'I leave the presidency the same way as I came in' - Rousseff

Brazil, Brasilia
August 31, 2016 at 23:02 GMT -00:00 · Published

Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff addressed hundreds of her supporters outside the presidential palace in Brasilia on Wednesday, after the Brazilian senate vote 61-20 in favour of removing her from office to face impeachment.

Speaking to the hundreds of people who are still backing her, Rousseff maintained her innocence, stating, "I leave the presidency same way as I came in: without being involved in any illicit act, without betraying any of my commitments, with dignity and carrying in my heart the same love and admiration for the Brazilian people and the same will to keep fighting for Brazil."

Rousseff has faced charges that her administration broke government budget laws in order to support her re-election in 2014. Former Vice-President Michel Temer has been acting leader since Rousseff was suspended following a Senate vote on May 12. On August 10, a majority of senators voted to proceed with the impeachment trial.

The former Brazilian President maintained she is innocent in the months running up to the trial, and accused government opposition of staging a coup.
