France: Hollande warns Turkey against 'inflammation' of Syrian crisis
French President Francois Hollande warned that Turkey’s military intervention in Syria could create further “general inflammation" of the situation. Hollande made the remark while delivering his annual speech to French ambassadors at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Tuesday.
"Today it's Turkey who has decided to deploy part of its army on Syrian territory to defend itself against IS, which is completely understandable after the attacks that this country has suffered; to control its borders,” he said. Hollande went on to warn that “military actions against the Kurds, who themselves fight against the Islamic State with the support of the coalition” could possibly “carry the risk of a general inflammation.” He concluded that that it was of “absolute urgency” to “halt [the] fighting and return to negotiations."
Discussing the conflict in Ukraine, the French president pointed to delays in implementing the Minsk agreement, saying: “this has brutally aggravated the situation, the risks of escalation have been increased.”
