Netherlands: Beach-goers hold 'burkini' solidarity protest in Scheveningen

Netherlands, Scheveningen

Protesters gathered to demonstrate their right to freedom of clothing and religion, in solidarity with women affected by the 'burkini' ban in France, on Scheveningen beach, in The Hague, Sunday.

The protest aimed to demonstrate a united opposition to the ban by Muslims and non-Muslims after a woman was seemingly forced to remove her head-covering swimsuit, nicknamed the 'burkini,' during a recent incident in France. Not all Scheveningen seaside-goers welcomed the protest, with one man calling the protesters "traitors" according to an activist.

Earlier in August, the southern French city of Cannes cited security reasons for banning the 'burkini' from all its beaches in a move that critics are labelling as discriminatory against Muslim women. People caught in violation of the ban face a €38 ($42.50) fine. The ban covers any full-length clothing with head coverings worn on a beach, but does not specifiy the 'burkini' swimsuits.

Cannes Mayor David Lisnard issued the ordinance on July 28 banning all beachwear that does not respect France's "secularism." Lisnard added that the ban was designed to protect the French population during an ongoing "terror threat."

On August 16 a court in the French town of Villeneuve-Loubet suspended the ban in its municipality on the grounds it might violate fundemental rights. However a number of mayors in France have said that they would continue to ban full-body swimsuits despite the ruling.

Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands Lodewijk Asscher has said the Netherlands would not be instituting a similar ban, despite some within Dutch politics having called for a copycat ruling. Dutch Freedom Party (PVV) head Geert Wilders, for one, has supported the ban, and on Friday unveiled a manifesto calling for the closure of all mosques and Islamic schools, and a ban on the Koran.
