Russia: Moscow skyline left black after deadly warehouse fire kills 17
Smoke could be seen billowing from a Moscow warehouse on Saturday morning, after a blaze ripped through the building in the northeast of the city, leaving 17 people dead. After the fire engulfed the 200 square metre building, four survivors were taken to the hospital. One of the victims later succumbed to their injuries, with 16 others dying on site.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry (EMERCOM) reported that as the fire was being extinguished, firefighters discovered a room cut off by the blaze. After breaking through a wall into the room, they discovered 16 bodies. They are all reportedly migrant workers and died from suffocation.
Firefighters arrived at 8:00 AM local time (4:00 AM GMT) and managed to extinguish the blaze by 10:00 am. According to EMERCOM, 12 people were rescued from the burning building. The fire is thought to be have been caused by a malfunction in a light which went on to set fire to flammable liquids and papers, later spreading to the rest of the building.
