A funeral service for 35 victims of Wednesday's earthquake in Italy took place in the commune of Arquata del Tronto on Saturday.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi attended the funeral ceremony of the victims from the towns of Arquata and Pescara del Tronto.

The death toll has hit 268 since the earthquake struck central Italy on Wednesday, with more than 200 people reported dead in Amatrice alone. The funeral of victims from Amatrice and Accumoli are planned on Wednesday, August 31.

The earthquake was felt across central Italy, including in the capital Rome, some 126 kilometres (76 miles) away from the quake's epicentre, in the town of Norcia.

Protesters booed Renzi as he left the funeral. The prime minister has declared a state of emergency following the event, releasing €50m in aid funds, while cancelling the taxes of residents worst hit by the quake.
