Deputy of the Russian Central Election Commission Vasili Lihachev and first deputy chairman of the commission for the election of the Foreign Ministry Andrei Nesterenko held a press conference ahead of the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Russia, from the Berlin, Wednesday.

Russia's parliamentary elections are due to take place on September 18. Some 450 seats in the State Duma will be appointed on a single day, with those voted in to stand for five-year terms. In the 2016 parliamentary elections, 75 single-mandate districts abroad will be tied with the 34 subjects of the Russian Federation.

In the press conference, Lihachev said that "despite the sanctions and ideological attacks" against Russia, the focus remains on the elections "as a significant subject of international relations and global politics." In this context, Lihachev noted that Russia is "willing to work with all states"; however, he underscored that it is imperative to form "a progressive image" of Russia as a democratic state.

He reported that around 800 international observers are expected to be present at the elections.

First Deputy Chairman of the Commission for Election of the Foreign Ministry Andrei Nesterenko also emphasised that it was critical for Russia to ensure that each Russian citizen residing abroad may exercise their constitutional right to vote for a candidate.

United Russia is presently the ruling party following its victory in the 2011 elections. Russia's Central Election Commission has clinched 14 parties that may submit lists of candidates. Other parties are expected to amass at least 200,000 signatures in order to submit a list of candidates.
