SOT, Journalist (Russian): "Why?"

SOT, Irina Bliznova, Russian handball player and captain of Olympic national team (Russian): "Because after all, this team was a two-time Olympic champion as well as World and European champion while we didn't win anything at all for the past seven years. Of course, that match was decisive because if we had gone further, we would have secured medals - no matter gold or silver. But after the match, we realised that we shouldn't retreat. If we defeated Norwegians, then why couldn't we just win against France?"

The Russian Olympic women's handball team, who had beaten France 22-19 and won the first gold Olympic medal in its history, was received with a warm welcome at Russian fans house in Rio de Janeiro, Saturday.

Head coach of the team Evgeny Trefilov expressed his confidence that "this team will bring a lot of joy to our fans again."

Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, the team's captain Irina Bliznova, commented that the match against Norway in the semi-finals was "the most difficult" and "decisive." She added: "After the match [against Norway], we realised that we shouldn't retreat. If we defeated Norwegians, then why couldn't we just win against France?"

Olympic medalists in individual rhythmic gymnastics Margarita Mamun and Yana Kudryavtseva were also in attendance.

Besides the handball team and rhythmic gymnasts, Rio pentathlon champion Alexander Lesun, bronze medalist in the men's 1000m kayak race Roman Anoshkin, as well as bronze medalists in boxing Vitali Dunaytsev and Vladimir Nikitin were in attendance.
