Mobile phone footage filmed on Thursday shows people hurriedly leaving the area of Manchester Airport, due to reports of a suspicious package. Terminal 2 has been evacuated and cordoned off.
Eyewitnesses took to Twitter to say that the item, which is believed to be a bag, had been left unattended for a long time in the drop off area outside the building. Passengers have been asked to leave the area, with a bomb squad due to arrive at the scene.
The alert came several hours after UK cyclists and Olympic gold medallists Joanna Rowsell Shand, Jason Kenny, Ed Clancy and Steve Burke arrived at the airport.
