Germany: 'Kursk' submarine-disaster video game showcased in Cologne

Polish video games developer Jujubee Games showcased its submarine-survival video game based on the Kursk submarine disaster, at the Gamescom trade fair in Cologne, Wednesday. The game, named 'Kursk,' is said to recreate the last moments of the Kursk submarine from the point of view of crew members on board.

Jujubee Games CEO Michal Stepien said "we wanted to make a game about a submarine, at first, and we did some research about real stories connected to submarine that could be transferred into the language of a video game, and this is how we came up with 'Kursk' because this story is interesting but it also is a specific story that can be transferred into the new media which are video games."

Stepien also expressed regret that the game had been "put into the political context of the rivalry between the West and Russia," following negative reaction by some Russian gamers. He suggested that that had not been Jujubee's intention.

Stepien also announced that the game would hit the gaming markets in Russia, expressing hope that Russian gamers would purchase it and play it, despite the controversy.

The Kursk submarine sunk in the Barents Sea on August 12, 2000, following an on-board explosion. All 118 personnel on board lost their lives in the disaster.
