India: Thousands take to Bangalore streets to decry Amnesty over Kashmir
Thousands of people took to the streets of Bangalore, Wednesday, to protest against the non-governmental organisation Amnesty International (Amnesty) following an event that the NGO staged last Saturday at which it had reportedly accused Indian authorities of human rights violations during the recent unrest in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The march followed a smaller demonstration organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Tuesday which was forcefully dispersed by police officers. At both demonstrations protesters demanded the arrest of those who had allegedly raised anti-India and anti-Indian Army slogans at Saturday’s event. Organisers have also filed a complaint of sedition against the group, a representation of which they burnt as an effigy at Wednesday's protest.
Large parts of the disputed region of Kashmir have been under curfew since last month when a separatist leader was killed by security forces on July 8, sparking an outbreak of violence. Clashes between Kashmir protesters and Indian security forces have reportedly led to the deaths of at least 50 civilians since then. Thousands of others have been injured.
