USA: 'Unprecedented' flooding leaves 8 dead, 20,000 uprooted - Louisiana Gov.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards gave an update on the damages rendered by severe flooding in Louisiana, Monday, announcing during a press conference in Baton Rouge that torrential rains and subsequent flooding had led to the deaths of eight people.

Edwards stated that while some 20,000 people had been rescued during the ‘historical’ and ‘unprecedented’ flooding, 40,000 homes had already been impacted, with continued high flood levels sending waters south.

However, the governor pledged that “nobody is going to be forgotten, we're going to work around the clock and we're going to do everything humanly possible to render aid.”

An estimated 20 inches of rain has hit Baton Rouge and its surrounding areas since the beginning of the floods on Friday. Some 1,700 members of the Louisiana National Guard have been mobilised to help victims, with US President Barack Obama answering Edward’s request for an emergency declaration in 12 Louisiana parishes.
