Brazil: Russia's Olympic gold medalists celebrate in Rio

Russia's gold medallist celebrated at the Russian Fans House in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night. Wrestler Roman Vlasov along with tennis women's doubles team Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina had all become Olympic champions on a golden day for Russian sport.

Vesnina took the opportunity to dedicate her medal to the Russian athletes who have been barred from participating in the games, stating "we played for those who could not come and those who were suspended. We devote our medals to them."

Makarova exclaimed "we aimed for this gold medal our entire career. We always dreamed to step on the podium, this dream came true and we won match-ball." Her partner, Vesnina, echoed her joy, stating "it is a childhood dream, it is the dream of the whole athlete's career, that all the athletes aim to achieve."

Despite his victory, Vlasov raised concerns over the refereeing in the 75kg wrestling tournament, "it's unclear whom the referees are sympathising for. Unfortunately, there are these moments in sport that someone is mistreated by referees, but that's what mobilised us, we were ready for everything."

The wrestler also took the opportunity to dedicate his medal to the legendary Russian wrestler Alexander Karelin. Retired Russian wrestler Karelin won gold at Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.

The three golds brings Russia's total to nine for the games, putting them in fourth place in the overall medal table.
