Brazil: Olympic Games 'not a platform for political debate' - IOC spokesman

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games organising committee gave a press briefing in Rio de Janeiro, Tuesday, following its appeal against the Brazilian Federal Judge's ruling that would allow spectators to display political banners inside the Games' venues.

In the briefing, the Rio 2016 communications director Mario Andrada confirmed they received a note from the Federal Judge, Joao Augusto Carneiro Araujo, who had issued the injunction overruling a Rio state government and Rio 2016 organising committee's ban on political slogans during the Olympic Games.

Andrada said they had asked the Judge for the reconsideration; however, he reassured that the Rio 2016 Olympic Games organising committee would follow the injunction unless it was cancelled.

In turn, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) director of communications, Mark Adams, expressed his hope that, "Everyone understands at home and around the world that this is a global event and the Games should not become a platform for political debate."

Commenting on calls to ban the whole Russian Olympic team from the next Winter Games, which will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Mark Adams said they would be taken into account by the IOC. He also didn't rule out further measures if the allegations around the Sochi 2014 Games, mentioned in Richard McLaren's report, were proven. He stressed, "I would say at the moment everything is on the table. Nothing is off the table."

However, Adams also noted that the IOC would study the issue carefully after the Rio Olympic Games.

Earlier in the week, German and Austrian anti-doping agencies have demanded a complete ban on the Russian Olympic team at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, following Richard McLaren's report on the alleged state-sponsored use of doping by Russian athletes during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
