USA: Anti-brutality protesters storm NYC shopping centre

United States, New York City
August 9, 2016 at 06:06 GMT -00:00 · Published

Anti-police brutality protesters shutdown traffic and occupied New York City's Fulton Centre near City Hall, Monday evening, railing at police violence against minority communities, specifically the recent death of 23-year-old Korryn Gaines at the hands of Baltimore County police.

Protesters had reportedly gathered at City Hall Park as part of a larger ongoing demonstration and occupation of the site, mobilised to raise awareness about institutionalised racism in both national and local US law enforcement departments. A number of the demonstrators later made their way to the Fulton transit centre and retail complex, marching and chanting anti-brutality slogans inside the building. They were met by dozens of police officers.

The ongoing spate of police killings of African Americans around the US has sparked anger and protests throughout the country, in extreme cases leading to civilian attacks on US law enforcement personnel. Korryn Gaines was killed by Baltimore County police officers at her apartment on Monday August 1, as they attemtped to arrest her for previous charges relating to a traffic stop in March. Gaines barricaded herself inside the flat with her five-year-old child, refusing officers entry with the threat of a shotgun. Following several hours of a standoff, the officers shot Gaines dead. Her child was also shot in the cheek by police gunfire, according to the Baltimore County police department.
