Russia: OSCE to deploy 500 observers to oversee Russian parliamentary elections

Jan Petersen, Head of OSCE’s Election Observation Mission announced that hundreds of OSCE monitors will be in place to observe the Russian parliamentary elections, at a press briefing in Moscow, Monday. The elections are due to take place on September 18.

Petersen said the observers “will arrive shortly before Election Day and will be deployed in multi-national teams of two across the country,” with their job being to “follow election day proceedings,” which would include observing voting processes, the counting of the vote as well as the tabulation of results.

The OSCE's chief election observer also announced that the election observation mission would include comprehensive media monitoring throughout the pre-electoral campaign.

Among the countries contributing to the mission are Romania, Poland, Georgia, Armenia, Latvia, Belarus, and Macedonia. A final report on the elections will be published within eight weeks of vote that will include recommendations on how the electoral process in Russia could be improved.

Elections to the 450-seat Russian State Duma will be held on September 18 under a mixed system: 225 lawmakers will be elected in one-seat constituencies and another 225 will be elected on party tickets.
