Russia: Mutko lauds readmission of Russian athletes to Rio Olympics

Russian Federation, Moscow
August 5, 2016 at 20:26 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russian Minister of Sport Vitali Mutko stated in Moscow on Friday that although Russia was sympathetic towards the decision of the IOC many Russian athletes, including competitive swimmer Yulia Yefimova, had initiated a claim against the decision and won.

According to the sports minister around 10 athletes followed suit and as a result will be allowed to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games. He reminded the public that "almost every national team, which participates [in Olympic Games] has such sportsmen". He cited the US team as an example: "The US team, as well as others, has these athletes. There are about 20 sportsmen who were disqualified in the past, have already completed their punishment and are participating in the Games now."

Yefimova made a statement about testing positive for doping at the end of March. However, she managed to withdraw charges levied against her and arrived in Rio in time to take part in the 2016 Olympic Games. According to Russian sports authorities, the IOC has since cleared at least 270 athletes.
