Russia: Quarantine put in place in response to Siberian anthrax outbreak
The Russian Defence Ministry released aerial footage on Tuesday near Yamal in the Siberian area of Yamalo-Nenets in Siberia, which has been quarantined following an anthrax outbreak. The outbreak has killed one boy and left dozens of others hospitalised.
So far 90 people including 50 children have been evacuated to the regional capital's Salekhard District Hospital as a precaution.
Russian authorities first became aware of the outbreak following the death of 1500 reindeer in late July. Anthrax is a potentially deadly bacteria that is usually transmitted to humans from animal matter, with the last such anthrax outbreak in Siberia taking place 75 years ago in 1941.
