USA: Pentagon spokesperson confirms US airstrikes against IS in Libya

United States, Washington DC
August 1, 2016 at 20:52 GMT +00:00 · Published

Pentagon spokesperson Peter Cook addressed the press in Washington, Monday, to provide details on the USA’s decision to bomb targets of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Sirte, Libya.

Discussing the targets Cook stressed that the USA would be working with Libya's Government of National Accord (GNA), saying, “There is a collaborative process. Very closely coordinated process that we've engaged with the GNA in terms of assessing and determining the precise locations to hit.” In terms of collaboration with GNA Pentagon spokesperson said that “United States military will be rigorously involved in every step of this process. We will be reviewing and deciding those lists of targets after, again, close consultation with the GNA."

The US confirmed it had launched multiple airstrikes against ISIS militants in Libya later on Monday, at the request of the UN-backed government. IS seized the Mediterranean town of Sirte last year. The home town of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is now one of the militant group's major strongholds outside of Syria and Iraq.

Libya is currently torn between three rival governments, following the toppling of Gaddafi's government in 2011 by US-backed groups. Much of the country remains under the control of a varied number of militant groups, including takfiri groups such as IS.
